KICKSTART THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT

With each new year, there comes an opportunity for a fresh start at work. Maybe this year you want to grow your business or advance your career. Perhaps you’ve already written out your 2023 resolutions and are ready to hit the ground running. It’s an exciting time and motivation runs through your veins.

But before you know it, you’re back to your old habits and are getting the same lackluster results. Does that sound like years past? If so, you are not alone! The majority of people struggle with keeping their New Year’s resolutions and end up returning to old patterns by MID-JANUARY!

So, what’s the secret to staying on track?

We’ve got a list of our favorite tips to help you start the New Year off right and will build the foundation to help you keep that promise to yourself. Achieve all your goals and let’s make 2023 your best year yet. Keep reading to find more:

CLEAN YOUR WORKSPACE

You’ve heard the phrase, “start small”, right? You might roll your eyes at this first tip, but it actually makes a world of difference and may be the best piece of advice you’ll get all year. Whether you normally sit at a desk in a cubicle or you have a whole office, it’s time to clean up your space. Give yourself a blank canvas to start the new year off with.

Where do I start to clean up my workspace? PAPERS.

Get rid of all paper on your desk. We suggest you file or scan what you need to keep and recycle the rest. Throw out your dried-up pens and your take-out containers. De-cluttering your workspace automatically clears your mind and allows you to focus on what’s important.

SET REALISTIC GOALS

If you haven’t yet set your 2023 goals yet, now is the time to do it! How about making this your first goal of the new year?

Goals come in all shapes and sizes. We all have those big lofty goals and we’ve found that the surest way to fall short of those goals is by making your goals unattainable. So, how do you set realistic goals? We have a few suggestions:

  • Be specific: Narrowing your goals makes them feel more attainable.

  • Make them measurable: This makes it easy to keep track of your success and you can reward yourself along the way!

  • Have a time limit: Giving yourself a time frame to work with helps you push to the finish line!

  • Write them down: Seeing your goals written out acts as visual motivation.

  • Be selective: Instead of moving a hundred things an inch, it’s better to move one thing forward a mile.

Your work is not the only area where you should be setting goals. Each area of your life affects the others, so set goals in every area.

  • Work

  • Finances

  • Spirituality

  • Mind & Body

  • Family

  • Social

CREATE A COMMUNITY

We believe that building community is so important and could be especially helpful when taking on your goals and new year’s resolutions. Talk about your goals. Whether personal or business, share them with friends, family members, and trusted colleagues so that they can support you. You can even ask others to push you and help keep you accountable.

Schedule a day on that calendar with key leaders or team members to brainstorm and come up with a game plan to achieve your new objectives. And we say, don’t do it at work! Get out of the office and into a new and neutral space. A change of scenery keeps distractions to a minimum and allows for more inspiration and creativity.

PRO TIP: While discussing new goals and strategizing with others, put your phone away and be present! Brainstorm together with a cup of coffee or a delicious meal!

BE READY FOR ADJUSTMENTS

Very few people get it right the first time! Making mistakes or misjudgments is a part of life and there’s no shame in it! If things aren’t going according to plan, ask for help. We don't know it all, so don’t claim to.

What should I do when I feel stuck? Be okay with asking for help instead of just trying to figure things out on your own. You can ask a co-worker about their experience and search the internet to find the best-sourced answers. Save yourself the time and ask for guidance.

Put effort into avoiding repeating past failures. Doing things, the same way, when you didn’t get the results, you are seeking won’t change the outcome. Instead, take a different approach and make course corrections if necessary. If you find yourself heading in the wrong direction, don’t hesitate to course correct. Nothing here is carved in stone. It’s okay to adjust your goals as you go.

BALANCE

Did you feel burnt out last year? Did you miss your normal exercise class or your kid’s ballet recital because work got in the way? Then this is the year for you to find a balance between work and play. In most cases, our jobs and work take priority over many other things in our life, but work isn’t going anywhere. The greatest wealth you can build is time. Manage your time so you can enjoy your work and feel excited by it, but you can also have time to do things for yourself and activities with your loved ones. It can all exist in the same space, you just have to make balance a priority!
